Before you zero in on that favorite office chair make sure you have asked the dealer all the right questions. Here’s a list of topics you can discuss with the chair dealer.
This is the most important factor one has to always keep in mind while buying an office chair. Ideally the chair seat height should be anywhere between 16 -21 inches from the floor as it has been found that it works for most of the people. This offers the comfortable height off the ground which lets you keep your feet flat on the ground and your thighs parallel and your arms on the desk.
Seat Width and Depth
Like the seat height, the seat width should be big enough to support users of different girth and sizes. Usually a width of 17-20 inches is standard range available in the market. At the same time, depth needs to be sufficient enough to leave approx. 2-4 inches of space between the back of knees and the seat of the chair. The chair should also have the forward/backward tilt function to adjust with various postures.
One of the most critical aspects of any ergonomic chair is the ability to provide support to the lumbar area of your spine. It has been found that if there is lack of lumbar support at the lumbar region then user’s tendency to slouch increases manifold and this result in flatness of the natural curve of the spine. This is why this feature becomes of special importance for it has the ability to adjust the height and depth of the chair
Nowadays the backrest of the seat comes attached with the seat but in case your seat and backrest are separate then make sure the height and angle of the backrest is fairly adjustable. In case the backrest and seat are one piece together then the backrest should have the option of tilting it forward and backward angle. Another feature is position locking system. You have to make sure that the chair can lock and secures the angle you are comfortable sitting in. like the seat width, even backrest width is important for comfortable sitting posture. The backrest should be ideally around 12 to 19 inches wide.
The material on the office chair seat and back should have enough padding to be comfortable to sit on for extended periods of time. Having a cloth fabric that breathes is preferable to a harder surface.
Recent studies have found out that even seat material has a huge impact when it comes to comfortable sitting experience. The body in contact of the backrest and seat needs to breathe continuously and if the material being used in these area is not something which allows breathing easily can lead to build up of a lot of heat. This in turn leads to uncomfortable sitting experience. This has been found to be the foremost reason for losing on productivity. Although in terms of ergonomics, they are not that vital but the seat cushion and fabric material do play an important role in comfortable sitting experience.
